Background of the Study:
Economic factors play a critical role in determining access to healthcare, particularly in regions with limited resources such as Kaduna State. Financial constraints, including low income, high treatment costs, and inadequate insurance coverage, significantly hinder access to essential cardiovascular treatments. As cardiovascular diseases continue to impose a substantial burden on public health, understanding the economic barriers that prevent individuals from accessing timely and effective treatment is crucial (Abdullahi, 2023).

In Kaduna State, socio-economic disparities are pronounced, with many residents struggling to afford advanced medical care. The rising cost of diagnostic tests, medications, and surgical interventions for cardiovascular diseases places a heavy financial burden on low-income populations. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive health insurance schemes exacerbates these challenges, forcing many patients to rely on out-of-pocket payments. Consequently, economic limitations not only delay treatment but also often result in patients seeking substandard care, thereby worsening their health outcomes (Garba, 2024). Additionally, geographic disparities further complicate access, as rural and peri-urban areas may have limited availability of specialized cardiovascular facilities.

Recent policy reforms aimed at increasing healthcare accessibility have had mixed results, with economic factors continuing to impede equitable access to cardiovascular treatment. There is a pressing need to evaluate how these economic barriers affect treatment outcomes and to develop strategies that can bridge the gap between available medical services and the financial capabilities of patients (Suleiman, 2025). This study will explore the relationship between economic status and access to cardiovascular care, with the objective of identifying key obstacles and proposing viable policy interventions. The findings are expected to inform targeted strategies that can enhance access to quality cardiovascular treatment, thereby reducing the overall burden of heart disease in Kaduna State.

Statement of the Problem :
In Kaduna State, economic barriers significantly restrict access to cardiovascular treatment, resulting in adverse health outcomes among economically disadvantaged populations. Despite advances in medical technology and treatment modalities, many individuals remain unable to afford necessary cardiovascular care due to high costs, inadequate insurance, and limited government support (Ibrahim, 2023). These financial constraints force patients to delay seeking treatment or resort to suboptimal healthcare services, which in turn exacerbate the progression of cardiovascular diseases.

Furthermore, the economic challenges are compounded by regional disparities in healthcare access. Rural and peri-urban residents often face additional hurdles, including longer travel distances to specialized facilities and higher associated costs. This scenario not only delays timely intervention but also increases the financial burden on affected families (Ahmed, 2024). The lack of comprehensive, region-specific data on how economic factors influence access to cardiovascular treatment creates significant challenges for policymakers and healthcare providers. Without a clear understanding of these economic barriers, efforts to improve treatment accessibility and quality may fall short, thereby perpetuating health inequities and worsening cardiovascular outcomes (Bello, 2025).

This study seeks to address the critical gap in knowledge by systematically examining the effect of economic factors on access to cardiovascular treatment in Kaduna State. The research will explore income levels, healthcare costs, and insurance coverage to identify specific economic obstacles. The ultimate goal is to provide evidence-based recommendations that can guide policy interventions aimed at reducing financial barriers and improving access to essential cardiovascular care.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of economic factors on access to cardiovascular treatment in Kaduna State.
  • To identify the specific economic barriers hindering access to cardiovascular care.
  • To propose policy interventions aimed at improving access for economically disadvantaged populations.

Research Questions:

  • How do economic factors affect access to cardiovascular treatment in Kaduna State?
  • What are the major economic barriers preventing individuals from accessing cardiovascular care?
  • What policy interventions can mitigate these economic barriers?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Economic factors significantly impede access to cardiovascular treatment in Kaduna State.
  • H2: Lower-income patients are less likely to receive timely and adequate cardiovascular care.
  • H3: Policy interventions such as subsidized healthcare and improved insurance coverage will enhance access to cardiovascular treatment.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study targets patients in Kaduna State who require cardiovascular treatment, focusing on the economic barriers that affect access. Limitations include potential inaccuracies in self-reported income data, a limited sample diversity, and a cross-sectional design that may not capture long-term trends.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Economic Factors: Financial conditions affecting healthcare access, including income, cost, and insurance coverage.
  • Cardiovascular Treatment: Medical interventions aimed at managing heart and vascular disorders.
  • Access to Healthcare: The ability to obtain necessary medical services in a timely and effective manner.
